It can feel a bit overwhelming trying to plan the perfect trip, especially if it’s your first time visiting Paris. But don’t fret – we’re here to ensure you get the most out of your Parisian adventure. This guide will provide you with 20 essential tips to navigate the city, experience Parisian life, and avoid common tourist pitfalls. So, ready to explore Paris?
Allons-y! (Let’s go!)
1. Paris Metro is your friend
The Paris Metro is an efficient way to get around – it’s fast, easy, and can help you save time when hopping from one destination to the next. Make sure you purchase a multi-ride pass for multiple trips! this will save you more money, than if you were to purchase per ride.
If this is your first time in Paris! don’t be scared of the metro. It is reasonably simple to navigate. I always recommend using Google Maps! Even if you do not have internet, you can download routes and see which metro you should take. You will soon be a pro after a few rides!
Regardless if you are using your phone or a physical map, always remember the metro stop near your hotel or Airbnb! this saved me so much stress when I ran out of battery and could not rely on my phone.
2. Avoid tourist traps in the main areas
When you visit a common tourist area, there will be a lot of street vendors or street performers. BE AWARE! these are the most common pick pocketer areas.
A lot of common things I saw, were “gifting” bracelets or flowers. This is a SCAM! always say no when strangers approach you to sell items or gift you something. many times they are just looking to get money from you.
My biggest recommendation is to say no and keep walking! do not stop.
3. Stay longer to explore other areas
Paris is known for its main attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Louvre Museum. There are so many other hidden gems to explore!
Take a couple of extra days to go off the beaten path and explore other parts of Paris. visitors always feel there was never enough time. Always try to add an extra day to explore! Let’s be honest, you will likely not be back for a while. Take advantage of your trip to explore even further.
4. Stay within detailed neighborhoods
When looking at a map of Paris, you will notice it is divided into arrondissements! It might sound confusing at first! but these are just the different districts. Each has its own unique character and charm! You should stay within a specific neighborhood that is closer to some attractions.
During my visit, I stayed in arrondissements 6! But you can look at each proximity and see which is best. Arrondissements 1-4 are the closest to the main tourist attractions!
5. Visit during nonpeak hours
If you are visiting the well-known tourist spots, make sure to visit during non-peak hours. You will save yourself a lot of time! This is especially true for attractions like Sacre Coeur or the Louvre Museum.
For the Louvre Museum, aim for early morning before it opens to beat the crowd. As soon as it opens at 9 am! Not only will you have a more pleasant experience, but it will also give you more time to explore the city to visit other attractions.
During my visit to the Eiffel Tower, I went during sundown. It wasn’t as packed! and it was truly an amazing experience to watch the sundown as I climbed the tower.
6. Seine river cruise
What better way to experience Paris than by taking a cruise down the Seine River? It’s one of the best ways to get a comprehensive view of the city while avoiding the hassles of navigating crowded streets.
During your ride, you will be able to see some iconic views such as Notre Dame, the Louvre Museum, and even La Tour Eiffel! If you are traveling with a partner, this is incredibly romantic!
There are multiple cruises to take! some offer dinner, alcohol, or just stunning views. You can purchase the tickets by going to the Seine River next to the Eiffel Tower. The price can vary! during our trip, we spent around $20 per person. This included beverages and a snack!
7. Book in advance to skip the lines
This is my number 1 hack when traveling! if you are a planner when it comes to vacation, you will really take advantage of this. BUT! if you like to go with the flow, most likely you will need to wait in line to get your tickets.
Planning ahead of time to book any attractions saved me HOURS during my whole trip. The lines in Versailles or the Louvre are insane.
Paris can be quite busy! even though I had an amazing time visiting, I always felt like there was not enough time. To save a lot of time and frustration, book tickets to attractions ahead of time! This will allow you to skip the lines and get straight to exploring!
8. Prepare your itinerary
When you visit Paris, it’s important to have a plan for what you’re going to do. Having an itinerary ensures that you don’t miss out on any must-see attractions or experiences.
Take some time to research the city and create an itinerary that includes the major attractions as well as smaller, more local spots. I always try to have a plan for each day! otherwise, I will get completely lost and lose time figuring a plan out.
As part of your plan, make sure you plan each trip according to proximity. You will waste a lot of time if you are traveling from one area to another, so try to plan strategically! I always visit My Google Maps! you can add your destinations and see the proximity of each attraction. complete time saver!!
9. Consider traveling during non-peak season
I love traveling! but it can be really annoying when there are sooo many people at your destination! this not only makes it more expensive, and crowded, but it will increase your time at any museum or attraction you are visiting.
Paris can get quite busy during peak season. During the summer, there are more people visiting the city! It’s best to avoid traveling during this time if possible. Not to mention the heat gets very intense.
If you’re looking for a cheaper option and fewer crowds, try traveling during non-peak season or shoulder months (like May or October). Airfare and hotel rates are usually lower and the weather is nice and chilly.
10. Explore local markets
No visit to Paris is complete without exploring the city’s many food markets! From small street-side stands to bustling indoor markets, there’s something for everyone. Markets offer a wide variety of fresh produce, baked goods, cheeses, meats, and prepared foods.
If you’re staying during the weekend! you will see many local markets on Sunday, take advantage, and try great authentic Parisian food. There are markets in every district, so ask around to see where the closest one is near you.
11. Learn basic French phrases
Although, I found many people in Paris speak English in the main tourist areas! having a basic understanding of French phrases can be quite helpful. Even if you’re just picking up some words like “hello,” “thank you,” and “goodbye,” it goes a long way when asking for directions or ordering at restaurants!
You don’t have to be fluent in French! but basic knowledge will really go a long way. On my first day in Paris, I stopped in a bakery for breakfast. They did not speak a word of English or Spanish! The only thing I remembered was how to order a chocolate croissant! Small works like this helped daily! try downloading Google Translate! Not only is it helpful, but it is also fun to learn different languages.
12. Relax and savor the moment
This might sound simple! but during any trip, you can easily be consumed by the chaos. Paris is one of the most magical cities on earth. Take some time to explore and appreciate it! Soak in the atmosphere, have a glass of wine in an old-fashioned café, or take a stroll down some picturesque streets. It’s important to remember that while visiting Paris, you should enjoy yourself and relax.
13. Plan day trips
Paris is undeniably a stunning city, but France has so many other places worth exploring. Don’t miss out on visiting the country’s diverse offerings! Make the most of your visit by exploring Versailles, Lyon, Fontainebleau, etc.
With convenient train or bus options, you can find yourself in a new city within just an hour. Prepare to be amazed by the beauty and charm that awaits you.
14. Understand tipping customs
Before becoming a world traveler, I did not know how different tipping was in each country! I was raised in a country where 15% was the average! As I traveled, I noticed some countries don’t even tip!
It’s important to understand the local tipping customs. Tipping is a sign of appreciation and politeness, so make sure you know how it works before your trip.
Restaurants in Paris typically already had a service charge! so I did not tip if already included. Make sure you notice the checks so you do not tip twice!
If tip is not included, customers should leave 5-10% of their bill as a tip. It’s also customary to round up the bill if paying with cash! If you had a big group and the service was great, 15% is a very generous tip.
15. Take advantage of museum-free days
Did you know that some museums in Paris offer free admission days? Many of the city’s top attractions have a designated day each week when they waive their entrance fees! So, if you’re looking to save money and visit some iconic galleries, make sure you check for free days before your next trip.
16. Safety Awareness
Paris is very safe! during my trip, there wasn’t a moment that I felt in danger. However! there are a lot of pickpocketers and tourist scams. It’s important to be aware of your surroundings at all times while traveling, especially in a big city like Paris.
Make sure to keep an eye on your belongings and be extra conscious when in crowded areas. If you’re carrying a wallet or purse, keep it zipped up and close to your body! Try to avoid those big backpacks or purses! instead, get a fanny pack or something you can wear in the front.
17. indulge in local cuisine, visit local shops, and experience the culture
Paris is known for its delicious cuisine. With so many restaurants to choose from, it’s easy to find something that appeals to your taste buds. Be sure to indulge in some classic French dishes like crepes, croissants, onion soups, escargots, or any of the mouth-watering options available!
One of my favorites was to eat crepes for lunch and then go by a local shop or try some street food for dinner! Paris is not the cheapest, so I always tried to avoid going to fancy restaurants. Try to visit more local shops for some great cuisine.
18. Create a flexible itinerary, leave room for spontaneous moments
It’s essential to plan ahead for your trip to Paris. Research the must-see attractions, plan out what days you’ll visit them, and create a loose itinerary that allows you to have some flexibility.
You should leave some room for spontaneous moments! This will give you the opportunity to explore whatever catches your eye during your stay! or if you want to relax and enjoy the moment. I loved stopping at a local shop and having a picnic, or ordering a crepe from the carts and waiting while enjoying the view.
19. Keep cash handy
Just like any other city, there are a lot of places that do not accept card payments. I always recommend carrying some cash when traveling in Paris. This will help you pay for transportation or just make it easier to purchase items from local shops!
I did not encounter areas where I could not use a card! but, I did need cash when purchasing from street vendors.
20. Wear versatile clothing
Paris weather can vary significantly throughout the day, so make sure to wear clothing that’s appropriate for both warm and cold temperatures. I found myself switching between sweaters in the morning and in the afternoon. Especially when visiting museums!
Make sure to pack layers, including a light jacket or wrap! This will keep you prepared for any kind of weather during your visit. If you are visiting before May, you will most likely need a jacket during the whole day. Paris can be very cold or hot depending on the season!
I recommend checking the temperature and taking at least one sweater and pants for nighttime.
21. SIM Card Data & Wi-Fi
When traveling to Paris, it is essential to have a SIM card with data or to find a reliable Wi-Fi connection. Having access to the internet can greatly enhance your experience and make your visit more convenient. With a SIM card or Wi-Fi connection, you can easily navigate through the city, find the best day trips from Paris, and explore the numerous attractions the city has to offer.
It is recommended to research and plan your trip beforehand by reading a guide to Paris or gathering tips for visiting the city. Knowing important information about the city, such as its monuments and the free Wi-Fi hotspots that Paris offers, can save you both time and money.
You can get SIM cards in multiple places, but the airport is surely the easiest one, even when it won’t be the cheapest. The best tip and trick to know before visiting Paris starts right at home, with your phone carrier. If you finance your phone through your carrier you probably can’t use another carrier’s SIM card.
If this is the case consider purchasing a cheap unlocked phone that will allow you to use important tools like Google Maps, or Uber, during your trip. If you choose to do this, without doubt, you will save time and money when you are going from monuments in and around Paris.
We downloaded the free tour when we were on the Montmartre Walk and couldn’t do it if we didn’t have our Euro SIM cards. But whether it’s exploring the Louvre, strolling along the Seine, or visiting the iconic Eiffel Tower, having internet access can help you make the most of your time in Paris and ensure a memorable experience.

With these tips, you’ll spend less time waiting in line and more time exploring the beauty of Paris on your first visit!
How much money should you bring to Paris for a week?
Budgeting for a week in Paris largely depends on your personal travel habits and budget. However, here’s a general guide to give you an idea.
I am a big-budget traveler, so this is how much I would recommend. Excluding accomodations & Flights! meals, budget around €30-€50 per day if you plan to dine at modest restaurants or cafes.
Entry fees for popular attractions like the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, and Versailles range from €10 to €20 each. Purchasing a Paris Museum Pass for around €70 can save you money if you plan to visit several attractions.
Public transportation, such as metros and buses, will cost around €20! you might end up purchasing multiples like I did.
Lastly, you may want to set aside a budget for shopping, whether that’s for French fashion, souvenirs, or local treats. A budget of €100 would be reasonable.
So, a rough estimate for a week-long trip to Paris could range from €1000 to €2500 depending on your lifestyle. This range includes accommodations but not air travel! I always try to spend as little as possible.
How many days should you spend in Paris for the first time?
For a first-time visitor, a minimum of five days in Paris would allow you to get a real sense of the city. This duration would give you enough time to explore the iconic sights such as the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Montmartre, and Palace of Versailles, while also leaving room for leisurely strolls along the Seine, exploring local neighborhoods, and indulging in French cuisine.
You could dedicate a day or two to the major attractions, a day for exploring different neighborhoods and markets, a day for a side trip to Versailles, and an extra day for any additional activities you might be interested in.
If you want to explore some day trips, staying longer will definitely be a great experience. You can visit Disneyland or another iconic city like Lyon.
things I wish I had known before going to Paris?
Looking back on my first visit to Paris, there are several things I wish I’d known beforehand.
- Cost: Paris can be more expensive than anticipated. From dining at a café to shopping for souvenirs, the costs can add up quickly. Setting a daily budget can help manage expenses and avoid unexpected surprises.
- Weather: Paris’s weather can be unpredictable, particularly during the off-peak seasons. I was taken aback by how cold it could get, especially at night. You are always outside and walking, so make sure to pack layers and check the weather forecast before your trip. It also rained a lot during my visit! even if you are not expecting rain, bring a rain jacket.
- Intense street vendors: There are numerous street vendors in Paris, and they can be quite persistent. Some even ignored me when I said I was not interested and would grab my hand. Be persistent and keep walking!
- The Language: Although many people in Paris speak English, a basic understanding of French phrases can enhance the experience. This not only helps in getting around but also shows respect for the local culture.
- budget-friendly: Tourist areas had a lot of food, and I found it hard to find more authentic meals. I liked going to cafes or street food for more budget-friendly ideas, but it was hard to find a good place at a low cost.
- Night-life: While you can find a lot of nightlife such as bars and nightclubs, I felt Paris’s main attractions closed earlier than anticipated. I am not sure if it was due to the weather or it being off-season! But I felt everything shut down by 10 p.m. and the streets were empty.
Remember, part of the excitement of travel is experiencing the unexpected, so embrace the journey.
where to stay in Paris for the first time?
Choosing where to stay in Paris for the first time can be quite a task given the numerous options available. Ideally, you would want to stay somewhere central to easily access the main attractions. Arrondissements 1-4 are excellent options as they are closest to many iconic landmarks like the Louvre, Notre Dame, and the Centre Pompidou.
That said, on my visit to Paris, I stayed in the Bob Hotel, located in the vibrant 6th arrondissements. This district, while slightly further from the city center, is a hub of Parisian culture and charm, brimming with quaint cafés, boutiques, and green spaces. The Bob Hotel itself was a cozy and chic option, with modern amenities and excellent service. Plus, being near famous sites like the Luxembourg Gardens and Saint-Sulpice, it provided a more immersive and authentic Parisian experience.
Remember, Paris has a fantastic public transportation system, so even if you are not staying directly in the heart of the city, getting around is not a problem.
What to skip in Paris?
It’s important to be aware that some Paris attractions can consume most of your time in the city. The Eiffel Tower is a must-see, but the long queues and throngs of tourists can be overwhelming, so consider admiring it from the Jardin de la Tour Eiffel (Eiffel Tower garden) on Champ de Mars or another stunning view from Jardins du Trocadero.
Another popular spot, the Louvre Museum, is home to iconic pieces like the Mona Lisa, but the crowds can dampen the experience for first-timers. If you are a first timer, and set on coming here to this Museum try getting in from the site entrance (much less crowded) and research about the location of the art you plan on visiting.
If you are okay not going to the Lovre, I would recommend exploring lesser-known museums and galleries instead. Out of all the museums and attractions in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay compares a lot to the Lovre but is much smaller (it is still huge). If you are coming to Paris on a budget you can visit the Musée de l’Orangerie, which offers equally impressive collections without the large crowds and is not as expensive.
Skip the touristy restaurants near major landmarks and opt for a more authentic dining experience in local neighborhoods. Lastly, don’t spend all your time in Paris on your itinerary. Venture out and explore different parts of France, as the country has so much more to offer beyond its capital city. By planning wisely and making informed choices, you can have the best Paris experience while avoiding some of the common tourist pitfalls.
What should not be missed in Paris?
If you are going to France for the first time, there are some attractions that you should not miss. Depending on the amount of time you are going you should prioritize the Eiffel Tower, and have a walk on Champ de Mars. I would recommend renting a scooter and heading to Arc de Triomphe to then walk to Champs Elysee. From there I would visit The Louvre Museum even if it’s just the outside and the Musée d’Orsay. End the day with the Seine cruise which will take you to the Notre Dame Cathedral and you will have a great overall view of the city of Paris.
If you have more time do not miss the Montmartre walk and Sacre Cour Cathedral and a day trip to Versailles.
What Americans should know before going to Paris?
All the Tourist attractions in Paris can be reached by walking or by taking public transportation. Also, the Paris metro tickets are affordable. Try to stay in hotels near central Paris this will help you save lots of time moving from one place to the other. There are many ways to explore Paris, but doing your research will save tons of time and money.
